La Soga Movie Premiere

I was somewhat hesitant going into the premiere of the movie, La Soga, starring Manny Perez and Denise Quinones. The hype following the movie was incredible but I wasn't letting that sway my judgement as I arrived at the Regal Cinema on 14th Street in New York City. The Red Carpet was shining with top notch Latino acting talent including Manny and Denise, along with Paul Calderon and Juan Fernandez, who is well known and respected in the Dominican Republic. Each of the actors spoke about their excitement to not only premiere in New York but also to have a film that told a unique story. Nuestra historia. A story of the struggles, the injustices and the innocence lost that many experience not only en la republica dominicana but in so many other nations that echo its perils. I stood by as the turn out of support landed in the hundreds of movie goers. I was just as interested to see if, indeed, La Soga, would stand up to all the hype. I was lucky enough to grab a seat in the packed theater as the lights dimmed and cheers exploded as the opening credits danced on the screen. Vivid imagery and familiar rhythms flashed before my eyes as I experienced a kaleidoscope of emotions ranging from laughter to sadness, and in some cases, pure terror. The story, told through the eyes of a young boy living in Santiago, took a brave stance against government corruption. It is very risky in its portrayal of the island and the violence that plagues it. Beware to those with weak stomachs and a strong love for animals, however the movie is sprinkled with comedic moments and is predicated on the purity of young love.

The end result was that La Soga exceeded my expectations. It succeeded in taking me on a journey that touched all of my senses and left me feeling sensitive to the experiences of my brothers and sisters who have lived a similar story. I would encourage my fellow latinos to do as I did and judge for yourself. After reading some of the critics remarks, it is evident to me that unless you are rooted in the culture, you just won't get it. La Soga opens in theaters on Friday, August 13th, 2010. "GUN" Premiered in the New York International Film Festival on July 30th , 2010.This film is action packed and very street edgy. It's about this gun runner on the rise.

GUN was written by Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, in which he plays the lead character along with Val Kilmer. This movie was Directed by the very well known music video director Jessy Terrero of Terrero Films. Curtis Jackson's character is more of a man who is trying to grow in a world of illegal firearms and becomes the head go to man. Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, told En La Escena that this screenplay was written originally on how guns go from the manufacturer to point of purchase, as distributed by law abiding citizens and then unfortunately falls into the wrong hands. 50 Cent also shared with us that he will be continuing to produce music and is currently working on a new album. Some of the members of the cast were present at the premiere like Lynn Whitfield, who played the role of 50 Cent's mother in the movie GUN. "Tropico De Sangre" Premiere in the New York International Latino Film Festival

On July 29th, Jessica Medina covered the Premiere of "Tropico de Sangre"in the NYILFF "Dominican Night" celebration for En La Escena. This event took place at Columbia University in Washington Heights, where a large majority of residents are Dominican. The evening was full of celebrities walking the red carpet and even supporting celebrity friends such as Henry from "Aventura" came to see the movie and shared with us the great news of recently becoming a dad. The French producer of this film that lives in Dominican Republic Joan Giacinti was present, along with Executive Producer/Director Juan Delancer. There were international as well as national actors such as Michelle Rodriguez & Juan Fernandez and more specifically Dominican actors residing in the U.S., such as Celines Toribio, Claudette Lali, Luchy Estevez, Sergio Carlo. The Director Juan Delancer, said: "It's a film that explores the atmosphere of a very peculiar dictatorship and in the same scenario the courage of three women and brave men who defied Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, and marked the end of a dictatorial regime."

Many are content with this film and say more films about the Dominican history and culture should be made so our youth could be educated on the history of the Dominican Republic.

Super group Aventura has amassed more accomplishments and accolades than any other bachata group in existence! For this reason alone, I was thrilled to be at their "farewell" party as they concluded the last leg of their US based tour. La fiesta, sponsored by Hennessy, was at the exclusive penthouse floor of the Rivington Hotel in New York City. You could sense everyone's excitement as they waited for the group to arrive. The energy built up by Romeo, Henry, Lenny and Max earned them an incredible year that lead to four sold out concerts in Madison Square Garden, nine Latin Billboard awards including latin artist and album of the year, and a trip to the white house to celebrate latin heritage with President Obama. If that wasn't enough to put them on top, their hit single, Obsesion went to number one across the globe in Italy! With their popularity and reach running wild, it was sad for most of us here in New York to imagine that they won't be back for a while. Rumors were running rampant about the group splitting up to work on solo projects so I couldn't wait to ask them myself! My time finally came as Lenny and Max stepped onto the carpet. I was able to breathe a sigh of relief as they assured me that they will indeed be back together to record another album. Gracias a dios! Of course, in the meantime, they will also be involved in solo projects, but that only adds to what this super talented group brings to the world. Their popularity en el mundo latino has been regarded to be as massive as that of the Beatles. Only time will tell if this is actually true and whether or not the group can amass the same popularity in mainstream american society. However, it is clear to them, and to all of who are fans, that they are truly living a grand aventura! Let's see where they land next! En La Escena went to "Studio Square" the new beer garden located in Astoria Queens. Also known as "S2" to cover the game of Mexico vs Argentina.

The garden of S2 was packed with fans of both teams and the energy was amazing!!! The sound of drums & bubuselas was present as well. I have been watching the World Cup games from home....but to go out to a bar & be next to others rooting for your team as well, cant be beat! Flags of Mexico & Argentina all over the place, people with flags painted on their face and arms (I was one of them) it was just great to be there!

But then my smile went away!!! Argentina scored their 1st Gol. A goal that should of been taken away...but I'm not getting into that right now. The Argentinian fans went wild and what was a mixed crowd... separated in a flash!

Mexican fans never gave up hope...they would sing "yes we can" but in Spanish. Then came other two gols! Argentinian fans then sang "No you cant" At this point I was like "we need to score at least one" we cant leave with a clean slate here!!!

Then it came...our one and only gol! S2 trembled! Mexican crowd went wild! The rivalry of Mexico & Argentina can only be compare to the rivalry of Yankees vs Red Sox's, that should give you an idea! So not to leave with a clean slate was crucial at this point!
The game ended, and the cheers just burst from both sides. Ones cheered for their win, while others cheered for pride! Because on these games that's what it all comes down to 'National Pride" win or loose we have to stick to out team! It was great to be live with the public enjoying the game, their love to us ELE is what makes it very rewarding. En La Escena was at the 2010 Annual Tropical Night at South Street Seaport with an All-Star Tribute to legendary Latin Music Promoter Ralph Mercado. The evening was full of salsa music the amazing Salseros Ray Sepulveda, Hector Tricoche, Michael Stuart and more. This year was also the "Bailando con Sabor" Dance Contest Sponsored by Ronald McDonald. ELE interviewed the winning couple who are best friends and have been dancing for 10 years winners of the grand prize of $500 dollars. Debbie Mercado was also present along with the entire Mercado family and received a recognition from El Diario Newspaper in rememberance of her father the entrepreneur Ralph Mercado. The Festival was not only filled with the Salsa Performances and the Mercado Family but we also had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Hector Maisonave. Hector has been in the industry as a promoter/manager for over 60 years. He is 88 years old and attended the Annual Tropical Night in remembrance of his bestfriend Ralph Mercado. Mr. Maisonave this year received the Legendary Award and PBS did a documentary on his life. ELE had a wonderful time at the festival and enjoyed the great Salsa Music that all these long time Salseros performed. En La Escena congratulates the Mercado Family for continuing to keep the legacy alive.

I knew writing this blog would be one trip down memory lane that I'd want to repeat over and over and over again! Los Latin Billboards desde San Juan Puerto Rico estuvo ENCENDIDO!! The event took place in the Conrad Hotel in the Condado district of San Juan. Puerto Rico was overjoyed to host one of the biggest award shows honoring some of the world's most illustrious latin musical talents.

Conferencia

Throughout the three day conference that kicked off with a Daddy Yankee listening party, myself, along with media partners My Latino Voice and Latin Trends Magazine viewed numerous star studded panel discussions and one on one exclusive interviews with featured artists. Kevin "Pills" Montano brought together a power house panel of urban music stars including Tito El Bambino, La Caballota, Ivy Queen, A.B. Quintanilla and Chino y Nacho to discuss the future of the urban genre in latin music. Elvis Crespo debuted his new single off his upcoming album while discussing trends in tropical music. Fourteen time nominated bachata kings, Aventura, took to the stage to reminisce of the days before they hit their huge success and how they created their chart topping sound. And perhaps the most highly anticipated one-on-one took place when Puerto Rico's own, Marc Anthony, gave everyone chills as he presented and spoke of his newest album and single, Y quien es el, originally sung by Jose Luis Perales. And if you think that was fun, that's because you weren't at the parties that culminated each day of the conference up until show time!

Fiestas

The waves crashing off the malecon were the perfect setting for the billboard pool party. The lights shown brightly as some of the hottest old school and new school performers took to stage sending the crowd into frenzy. From young super stars En'klave to Bachata Heightz, Elvis Crespo and Victor Manuelle, every hip was swaying as the whole crowd sung the lyrics word for word. The warm air was filled with the celebration of music and artistry and I was certainly in my glory. The festive atmosphere was definitely happening afterwards, in the hotel lobby, as we ran into many conference goers and industry professionals and performers like Danny "El Chulito" Fernandez of the 740 Boyz. The following night's festivities took it to yet another level as the various nominees were honored at a pre-show red carpet bash. Young cutie Prince Royce sang his bachata rendition of Stand By Me that left most of the crowd cooing but Luis Enrique blew everyone away with his blow out performance of Yo No Se Manana! Increible!

Awards Show

En La Escena was center stage to watch the 21st annual billboard awards. We caught every incredible moment from the standing ovation given to Ricky Martin, to a collaboration between Paulina Rubio and Wyclef Jean, to performances by Wisin and Yandell, David Bisbal, Juan Luis Guerra, Thalia, Luis Fonsi and the spirit of hope award given to Marc Anthony following his jaw dropping performance. Aventura took home the most of the awards followed by Tito El Bambino who only managed to walk away with seven!

Considering I haven't seen much press concerning the opening of the movie, La Mission, I decided to do my due diligence and tell everyone I know that seeing this flick starring Benjamin Bratt is a MUST! This movie tugged on my heartstrings and had me sitting at the edge of my seat throughout its entirety! It is not only rich in cinematography but also expresses a wide range of emotion and drama. Benjamin Bratt's character, Che Rivera, is a Chicano male who is a single father employed as a bus driver and is both respected and feared in his San Francisco barrio, la mission, for being a real "macho". Adding to his persona is his love for low riding cars, which he restores to a beautiful finish so he and his posse can take a cruise down the street "low and slow". His whole world comes to a climatic tailspin when he discovers pictures of his son sharing a kiss with a male companion. This discovery leads to a physical altercation between father and son as Che disowns his only child for being homosexual. As each party tries to work through the upheaval, Che is forced to deal with his alcoholic past and his tendency to turn to physical means to dissolve his problems. To say this movie is deep and gripping is an understatement! For all Latinos alike, you'll find a piece of you in this movie, and you'll be shocked how it addresses countless topics that have long been taboo in our culture. This film was written and directed by Peter Bratt and also stars Talisa Soto Bratt. It is not the type of film that you should go see just because it is spearheaded by Latinos. It is the type of film that you should go see because it quality, it is powerful AND it is spearheaded by Latinos! This ELE reporter gives it an enthusiastic two thumbs up!! "Grito mundial" was exactly what you heard the moment Daddy Yankee entered the building at NYC club, Quo. The Puerto Rican born reggaeton artist showed this En La Escena reporter just how loyal of a fan base he had. The entire club broke out in pandemonium the moment they knew that Daddy Yankee had arrived. New York City DJ, Alex Sensation of La Mega 97.9, spun Daddy's newest hip shaking ritmo, grito mundial. Lucky for me, I was able to capture a few moments of the Daddy's time to ask him about his latest project and the influences that brought it to life. Johnnie Walker's Party of the Century!

En La Escena was present at the 100th year Anniversary for Johnnie Walker Black Label.

The special night was hosted by Carlos Ponce - Singer, songwriter, producer, actor and host. Who recently starred in the Hollywood hit-film Couples Retreat.

I had the opportunity to sit down & interview Carlos Ponce. An interview that shows a very accessible, fun & charming Carlos and you will be able to see it very soon here on En La Escena!

To say that the night was a success in an understatement!

Johnnie Walker Black Label sure knows how to throw a party! No wonder they are The world's favorite brand of whiskies. They celebrated this special milestone with a Latin flair & called it "Fiesta del Siglo" ( Party of the Century) The house was full & everyone was enjoying their drinks & hors d'ourves. Also throughout the night I heard multiple times announcements asking people to drink responsibly.

The opening of the show was amazing! I call it the "Keep Walking" Intro. Behind a white screen They cleverly showcased the human evolution with silhouettes. Showcasing the gradual evolution until man achieved to stand upright. Next they showed the signature silhouette of Johnnie Walker's Striding Man with a hat & cane. As the screen fell there was the Host of the night Carlos Ponce dressed as Johnnie Walker. Simply genius! Then the guests enjoyed the unforgettable dances the rest of the night.

I have to say that is was great to be at the Fiesta del Siglo. For me it shows the respect that Johnnie Walker has for our Latino Community. They could'nt have had a better host then Carlos Ponce, since he is very loved & respected by the Latino Community.

"The Ministers" World Premiere...

I was invited by my producer Toni Austin to cover the movie premiere of “The Ministers”. I didn't know what to expect but when I got to the Lincoln Center Theater the place was crawling with celebrities such as John Leguizamo, Franc Reyes, Florencia Lozano, Wanda De Jesus, Manny Perez, Harvey Keitel and many more. It was great to see everyone smiling and so proud of their work. It's rare to see a predominantly Latino movie cast, so you know En La Escena had to capture the moment. They were all so happy to speak to us and gave great feedback on their involvement with the film.

Then came the moment... curtains! We all rushed and were anxious to get seats to watch this movie everyone was so excited to see. Luckily, I ran into a good friend by the name of Edwin Pagan (a Latino horror film maker) and we snagged some seats (2 seats for 3 people and guess who had to sit in the middle... yea, yours truly.) Seats were slim pickins' because this place was packed, so you know my pain (lol).

I support the director's vision and am very proud of his accomplishment. The plot was twisted but wasn't confusing. John Leguizamo, played twin brothers and I thought he did a great job. Captain Diaz (Wanda De Jesus) was one of my favorite characters as well as the gangster Carlos Rojas (Luis Antonio Ramos). There's a little bit of everything in the flick: action, romance, betrayal, scandal, comedy, drama and of course... religion. Definitely check it out, it's worth it and give me your opinions. Tommy Hilfiger was one of my favorite collection. It was a refreshing collection not to mention the models were the hottest lol...! Male and female models struck the runway in nautical and californian looks. Every single item in his collection is wearable and functional both for men and women. It's fashionable yet very pretty and he offered an array of very playful colors and great color combo such as navy/pink,navy/white etc. This time, he took a notch sexier!....Love the mini dresses and evening gowns. Bravo Tommy! Among the celebrities were none other then Taylor Swift sitting on the front row wearing a gorgeous red dress.

Michael Kors showed a collection inspired by architectural shapes, very geometrical, asymetrical, with a lot of slits, zigzagging, suits and sleeveless dresses. The collection had a futuristic feel with a lot of metallic and textured prints. His dresses were simple yet edgy and colors remained delectably simple: blue, aqua, lilac, ivory, white, black and silver. A great collection, something expected from Michael.

I thought I was going to be nervous walking into the largest and oldest spanish language radio station in New York City. But truth be told, JI Starr, radio announcer and DJ of La Mega 97.9, was so incredibly gracious to me that the interview between us just flowed like a regular conversation between two friends. JI Starr opened up to me about his life and career, remembering the challenges and successes of his many years in the media industry. He talks specifically to how he overcame his challenge to rise to the top despite the fact that spanish was his second language. He also shared some special secrets with me that he personally uses to keep his vocal performance in tip top shape!

Overall, I found my time with JI to be incredibly insightful, entertaining, and just down right fun! JI's huge heart shines through his eyes and he comes across as someone who is not only passionate about what he does, but passionate about his "cultura". I think this man would do great on TV! Last night I was "En La Escena" with Frankie Negron at the Canal Room in NYC. Frankie was debuting his latest album which was --get this--a ROCK album! No one was more surprised than me. I had the pleasure of interviewing Frankie one on one before he took the stage to perform. He confided in me that it took him two years to invent his english sound. He spoke of having a strong salsa fan base but was hoping that his fans would embrace this side of him that he had been yearning to express. This Puerto Rican New Jersey native did not disappoint with a standing room only performance that had everyone bopping their heads in unison. His melodic lyrics and sultry vocals gave the intimate audience a rare view of himself. He seemed almost liberated which is in harmony with the title of his album, Independence Day. Lucky for me, I got to go home with a copy of his new CD and a memory to last me for years to come. =o) Hasta la proxima mi gente! This is Leticia Reyes, special reporter for En La Escena.

On Sunday September 13th, the tent at Bryant Park was completely full attracting a front row as powerful as she is: André Leon Talley, Tina Brown, Fran Lebowitz, Graydon Carter, Terry Richardson and Carine Roitfeld. Everyone was anticipating to see the DVF's spring/summer 2010. Best known for her animal printed jersey dresses, Diane presented a collection with several animal printed dress offset by many solid dresses and separates as well as swimsuits accessorized colorfully. Making wearable and functional garments, Diane has succeeded one again in making functional and very pretty dresses. Colors were once again vibrant, wild, lots of glitz as well as layers. Silhouettes are feminine and hourglass with focus mainly on the waistline. However, I came to wonder if the name did not become bigger then the product... For some reason, I expected a little more from her and left the tent still hungry. Have we become greedy of too much? After all, she's human...LOL

VASSILIOS KOSTETSOS: Greek God DESIGNER unveiled:)

Well known and loved in Greece, fashion designer Vassilios Kostetsos has been a leader in the fashion industry for the past 15 years. He is known for his divine designs. For the 1st time, Vassilios Kostetso showed during New York Fashion week and he has proven that his talent has no boundaries.

In the heart of NYC, on September 13th 2009 at Bryant Park in the Salon, Vassilios Kostetsos presented his much anticipated Spring/Summer 2010 collection themed PHIDIAS, an ancient Greek Sculptor.

The men's and woman's collection was simply beautiful, fresh and very distinct. The women's designs were very much haute couture and perfectly tailored to say the least meanwhile the men's designs were outstandingly sharp yet wearable.

The entire collection was mainly composed of fitted bodices, reminiscing of the proportions of the ancient Greek Statues. The perfect silk forms were very often ornated with sequins, embroideries, semi-precious stones while the strong puffy cap sleeves were a characteristic of the lines of the Greek Kore Statues.

Models strutted down the runway with a clean polishes look. The women had their hair pulled back in a bun with a very natural yet contoured makeup meanwhile the men had their hair parted on the side to accentuate the European feel.

The shapes varied from a short and fitted strapless bodice, to a full-length version flaring out at the hip level, some great structure short jackets with the intense shoulders lines, crispy jackets for men often paired with a scarf and straight-legged pants. The women's pieces were perfect red carpet pieces as they exuded glamor, elegance and freshness. The beauty of the entire line resided in the simplicity of the shapes with attention to details, the combination of fabrics, the appliques and cutouts and the juxtaposition of solid next to or topped with sheer. Though the men's pieces presented nothing new in terms of shapes, the freshness came from the alluring cuts of the jackets and the fresh colors. The whole collection featured a strict color palette consisting of timeless colors such as nude, white, tan, black with some accents of Salmon...colors that played with the theme of the brightness of the sun.

Vassilios has once again proven that his craft can bring men's and women's to their utmost elegance with clean lines, lavish details and rich fabrics. To some, the line was restricted and perhaps very inclined towards the young and thin bodies but to most, the collection was cohesive, fresh and simply dazzling!

VIVIENNE TAM SPRNG 2010: It's Hyppie...but not peace and love.

This season she took it to the next level by partnering with Stylecaster to live stream her show. Vivienne Tam was the last show after the much anticipated show of Chado Ralph Rucci on Saturday September 12th. Vivienne Tam chose fun an attractive colors for her Spring 2010: tans, purples, turquoise, greens, yellows using suede, silk and chiffon as her main fabrics. She tastefully chose her colors and the collection definitely breathed 70's and Rock & Roll. Pants were flare legs and she opted for an array of large and colorful butterfly prints light either long or knee-length dresses. Huge fringed-handbags were one of the main accessories and sandals were either flat or very high platforms with straps. The collection which was very young and jovial failed to display originality. It has already been done before and this is expected from a Spring/Summer collection. Fortunately for Vivienne Tam, she has already long established herself and this is only one of many more collections to come. Designer Vivienne Tam is known for her digital savvy - after all, she partnered with HP to create the most stylish computer ever last year, the Digital Clutch!

CHADO by RALPH RUCCI SPRING 2010: MARTHA STEWART is a fan...

Chado by Ralph Rucci once again gave a satisfying show...The Fashion Runway beautifully set up like a painting...Ralph Rucci is indeed also a painter and has exhibited his work at 4 solo exibitions over the past 5 years. No wonder why all eyes were ready and anticipating to see the new collection including celebrities such as Martha Stewart, Steve Harvey, Ashlee Stanford & Simpson who were all front row sitting...At the entrance, it was a total chaos, a-listers, celebrities, fans trying to get in, hungry photographers pushing one another to get a good spot...everyone expected an amazing show especially after last season's flawless show. Chado Ralph Rucci is a luxury clothing line designed by Ralph Rucci, the first American designer to receive an invitation to the Paris haute couture shows since Mainbocher. The name of the collection comes from chado, the Japanese tea ceremony noted for its attention to detail, exactitude, sense of austere style, and intensive expertise on the part of the practitioner.

Chado who is very much inspired by Japanese culture and easthetics kept his designs minimalist and simple yet extremely elegant and rich in textures and details. He is a genius when it comes to construction methods in executing his creations. This season, Ralph has utilized extensively fabric treatments and embroidery techniques that "can be construed as stairways, or ladders, rising up from the hems of garments and literally becoming more refined as they climb " Color palette include mainly black & white,and some accents of pink, yellow and greys using rich and diverse fabrics such as chiffon, silk woven, silk gros and leather. The collection is delectably refreshing by the contrast made between the simplicity of his garments yet complexity of the fabrics and textures that he has himself created. The Silhouettes remained feminine yet classic. There was certainly something magical and mystical about his show...which attracts mainly an older clientele but something tells me Ralph Rucci has maybe convinced a few younger women to wear his impeccable & classic designs. I wouldn't be surprised to see Michelle Obama wearing a Chado dress. The collection was utterly beautiful.

NICOLE MILLER SPRING 2010: Ciara and Amber Rose at front row

Nicole Miller has become as household name in the Fashion industry. Celebrities, socialites and fashionistas love her style, particularly her dresses. Launched in 1982 by designer Nicole Miller and Bud Konheim (who remain business partners to this day), the label has become a multifaceted fashion institution, with four major lines that range from sportswear separates to red-carpet dresses. Miller’s signatures are her bright prints and patterns (influenced by a variety of cultures and eras), which grew from an early “obsession” with Celtic knots. Beyond the label’s major lines, Miller also designs handbags, eyewear, shoes, lingerie, swimwear, fragrances, beauty products, and two diffusion lines for JCPenney.

This season, Nicole took inspiration for the element of water and ocean for her upcoming collection, she opted for the storm and the boldness of the ocean. Asymetry, geometry, sparkles, metallic, big and bold are descriptive of her edgy collection. There were mashups and slashes — and some noteworthy asymmetrical dresses that had blocks of prints she called “riptide” and “ocean current” placed opposite chunks of black. Miller offered an array of tight shorts and crinkled pants and asymetrical and modern dresses. Most of her outfits seem to focus on the hip and waist area with sashes as the main body part unlike most designers who focused on the shoulders this season. Her color palette consists of mainly black and white with accents of greens and blues. Sitting front row were Jill Hennesy, Ciara, Amerie and Amber Rose (Kanye West's gf) both looking stunning and dressed in black. I must admit her collection did not wow me especially with all the buzz surrounding her brand name...but of course, she can't always please everyone:)

FASHION NIGHT OUT IN NYC: RETAIL STORES TURNED INTO "NIGHTCLUBS"

Fashion, Fashion, Fashion!

It was simply chaotic in the Meatpacking District yesterday evening.
Stores were open until 11-12pm with DJs spinning, drinks served and promotions given away...people were lining up to get in their favorite stores. In the US, American Vogue has joined with NYC & Company, the City of New York, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America to enliven again the consumer spirit that churns the economy and boosts the local industry of America’s fashion capital, New York City. Next only to finance, fashion is the second-largest sector of industry in New York City—the headquarters of more than 800 fashion companies employing 175,000 people and generating $10 billion in total wages. At City Hall’s May 20 press conference to announce Fashion’s Night Out, Vera Wang said, "To put it bluntly, if people don’t shop, people lose their jobs." Please help the retailers! lol

The first evening of New York Fashion Week, Fashion's Night Out is celebrating the retail business to encourage and help retail stores, who have suffered a lot especially in this economy. It seemed to me like most people were there more for the promotions and free drinks/foods lol... rather than shopping. It was a fun night out with friends, definitely Sex and The City style...

At the Diane Von Furstenberg store, a hundred of young women and a few men (boyfriends) were waiting in line to have their photograph taken with Diane in person. She was there signing signing autographs and yes she seemed genuinely nice and pleasant, a warm and kind woman...yet so powerful.

At SCOOP, they were promoting a new lip gloss that plumps the lips yet has HOODIA an active herbal ingredient to cut appetite...now that sounds gross if you ask me. I do not want to starve myself but it seems like most women want to look like Angelina Jolie these days. The lip gloss were going for $20 each and the promotion was if you buy 2 you get the 3rd one free. Who needs 3 of those? lol...At least, Veronica, one of he spokes model of the lip gloss, looked like she was having fun promoting it.

It was definitely a fun night but not sure it was lucrative for the retailers...

BRYANT PARK DAY 1: Michael Angel kicks off NY Fashion Week playfully

Michael Angel kicked-off NY Fashion Week with a strong collection and hell of a statement! It was all bold, colorful, bright, glitzy, geometric and very fun. His silhouettes were mainly concentrated on the torso and most of his dresses were short and playful. Aussie Designer Michael Angel made a collection for modern and independent women. He drew inspiration from strong influential women such as Nancy Cunard and Josephine Baker. Bold prints included abstract florals and faceted gems, and several ensembles featured heavy doses of bling on sleeves, collars, and the best of these, "Swarovski" embellished zippers that were subtle and swank. Loved it! His show definitely left our mouth watery begging for more. His fashions are absolutely entertaining to watch although they wouldn't be to everyone's taste.Earrings were also geometric and bold, natural makeup to balance the boldness. Sexy, Sexy even when the economy is low! :) Why not?

SACHIKA FASHION REPORT: Emerging Designer SPURR: Romantic men are back!

So we had the opportunity to attend a great Fashion Show yesterday.
SPURR BY Simon Spurr launched its Spring/Summer 2010 collection. Having worked for brand names such as Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, Spurr started his line 3 years ago, here in New York.
With an array of "pretty boyish models" wearing his clothing, Simon Spurr went for a refreshing and clean look for Spring/Summer 2010. The collection had a great sense of unity.
Lots of pink, salmon colors, soft yellow and light blue, navy blue, grey, pale lilac, pastel color palette with cuts reminiscing of the classic look with a touch of Golf...accentuated by his signature the handkerchief flower...I would say romantic men. Silhouettes were slender, clean lines. Fabrics were light such as light weight nylon, wool, cashmere, Lapel Linen, cotton bamboo. Great mix between casual and sophisticated yet functional.The collection is perfect for men that are confident in their masculinity because not all men can pull off pink or yellow, straight legged-pants with flower handkerchiefs...The vintage jeans appeared very comfortable. Our friend Daniel was wearing of their jean and stated :" They are so comfy! ".
The PR company behind the event pulled off a great event sponsored by delicious ACAI VEEV vodka, Fiji water and Parrot frames, good music by a DJ ALEX from Tokyo, great loft, amazing location and very classy and good-looking crowd.
Look out for this emerging designer, he is definitely a rising high-fashion Designer!

My experience at the 2009 NYC Salsa Congress

It is with great enthusiasm that I share with you all my experience at NYC’s 2009 Salsa Congress held at the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan! The entire event was rich with music, fun people, wonderful instructors, fantastic dancers and plenty of vendors to choose from. Each one of my senses was delightfully tickled as I made my way through all the salsa-oriented activities that made you shake your hips in participation! I really got into it!
John “Choco” Knight did a splendid job coordinating this year’s event and addressing the needs of the salsa community. He managed to bring the congress to another level this year by making sure to provide educational opportunities to the youth and also by booking the biggest musical act to hit the congress stage in all its years, legendary Eddie Palmieri!
I had to make sure I was prepared for the 3 days of activities so I headed to the vendors to gear up. I found myself at the Salsa Footsies table where I purchased a $70 pair of dancing shoes. I felt official! From there, I joined a workshop with Melissa Rosado who taught me some sexy dance moves that were sure to attract a serious papi chulo! Thanks Melissa! I also partnered with dance instructor, Rene Gueits who taught the Casino Rueda workshop which concentrated on some serious turn patterns. I broke a sweat and got seriously dizzy so I decided to ask the real professionals how they managed to maintain their cool on the dance floor. I was fortunate enough to come across head judge Jamie Josephson, who explained to me the rules of competition for this year’s salsa congress competitors. I found out the winners took home a mega trophy, a title and 5,000 big ones to share. I was so curious what it would take to prepare for competition or performance so I headed backstage where I ran into a couple of crews preparing to take the stage. The crews included the Diamond Dancers from Caguas, PR directed by Sonia Rivera, Christine and Andrew from Lorenz Dance Studio in Queens, NY, Katherine, Victor, Franklin, and Johanna from Mambo Bravo located in Queens, NY, and the Rekreation Dance Company, a 27 person dance crew out of Houston, TX. Each of them assured me that preparation was rigorous but that the love for the dance superseded any challenges they might face along the way. They all left me in awe with their performances!
Through this wonderful experience I learned that salsa has no limits or discrimination. Anyone can participate no matter how young or old, no matter where you reside on the map, no matter what nationality or origin you come from, or what level of experience you have. And! With a little hard work, dedication and commitment to having fun, you can be on your way to becoming the salsera or salsero of your dreams! I know I’m on my way! Calle 13 rocked SummerStage!

Once again En la escena brings you on the scene!

The group Calle 13 was part of the 10th Anniversary of LAMC (Latin Alternative Music Conference) Calle 13 was the headliner of the event & one of the most anticipated bands on the 24th season of Central Park's SummerStage!

SummerStage free concert reached it’s maximum capacity of 5,000 people!

It was amazing to see the line from 72nd street all the way to 65th street! The Latino presence was strong & the fans were eager to see Calle 13 perform. It couldn't be a more perfect day. The weather was great & so was the energy!

Before Calle 13 went up on stage, En La escena interviewed René Pérez Joglar – El Residente CALLE 13. An interview entirely in Spanish by Host Paola Cancellieri. El vistiante Eduardo José Cabra Martínez was not part of the interview since he was doing the sound check at that moment.

Calle 13 opened up with “ No hay nadie como tu” and the crowd went wild! The whole concert was energetic & fans loved every second of it.

El Residente also invited some female fans up on stage & they danced like never before to the beat of Calle 13.

But I must say that the fans went crazy when “Atrevete” came on!
After all is the song that made them who they are today Latin Grammy winner's!

During the performance El Residente managed to give a shout out to all the Immigrants! And said “we ain't going nowhere” He is definitely one of the few Artists who uses his platform to speak up about topics in our Latin community.

At the end Calle 13 gave tribute to Michael Jackson. By doing the famous dance of the ghouls in the video Thriller. El Residente then pointed up to the heavens & gave tribute to Michael. A great moment that Fans absolutely loved.

We are huge fans of MJ...What an honor for SACHIKA to come and report this event... Michael has brought so much to the world and leaving so abruptly was a shock to everyone...He was the BIGGEST superstar of all time and now, millions are in mourning...Michael has had a very unique and most would say difficult life...but somehow he might be at better place now. I hope so, because, Michael will be so ever dearly missed...

On July 1st 2009, thousands came to celebrate the life of a legend and engrave his music into our hearts and soul forever. The Jackson 5 performed over 40 years ago at the Apollo at the very beginning of Michael's career and the Apollo is paying tribute to Michael by offering a complimentary viewing of the most poignant moments of his life as well as the last footage of his rehearsal a few days before he passed away...Words can't express how sad I was when I found out he passed away. So young, so talented...ouch.... Michael Jackson dead almost means the death of an era...How could it even be? It's so hard to believe for many people.

At the Apollo Theatre,in Harlem, where the biggest superstars have graced the stage before and during stardom, people were celebrating and embracing all that Michael has given to us. For so many people, he was and still is their true musical and life inspiration. Thousands have waited hours and hundreds waited over 12 hours to pay tribute to their idol. Some have stayed overnight sleeping outside of the Theatre...."This is once of lifetime experience, I wouldn't have missed it for this world!!!" said a 22 year old female singer/songwriter inspired by Michael Jackson.

It was all love. And I couldn't helped but to feel sad yet hopeful. "Michael is here, his spirit is here and will remain with us forever! He will never die!!!" Those are the words that came out of 44 year-old male resident of Harlem. And truly, his presence was here...It was magical. I never felt so much love in one single place...It was exciting yet peaceful.

Tony Austin, the executive producer of En La Escena and I arrived at approximately noon and stood in line at the backdoor of the Apollo with 30ish other press and media. We were all anxious to see what the Apollo has prepared to pay homage to the legendary Michael Jackson.We finally got to interview people at 1pm and, it was chaotic. People were exhausted and have been waiting for so long, but the energy, was still there.. People were singing, dancing, smiling, celebrating Michael's legacy. It's beautiful to see how dedicated fans can be.

Tony and I found ourselves a spot sandwiched in between so many other paparazzi, ready to report the event of the century. I was able to interview 15 fans ranging from 8 to 6o years old, men, women, black, white, Latino, it didn't matter. Everyone was here for the same reason to, pay tribute to their all time favorite artist: Michael Jackson. Each has their favorite MJ's song and a few even sang a little piece for me...Loved it! Loved seeing peoples' face and body coming to life when singing one of his songs...It really came from the heart...It is so unfair to see that sometimes people never see what they got until it's gone. While alive, Michael for the last decade, Michael has been ridiculed and misjudged and wrongly accused by the media and the public and now he is deceased, people are starting to realize that he was only a troubled being... Michael is surely very appreciated right now, more than ever and will be remembered forever...I just wished he was here to witness what I saw...The world loved and loves Michael...

I could have stayed there forever, watching people smiling, dancing and singing with so much love and warmth..Michael, with his music and great charitable achievements has clearly touched the lives of millions and will continue to do so for years to come...Inside the Theatre, as people we let in slowly but surely, the crowd was applauding Michael's life, legacy and achievements. A few superstar kids event jumped on stage and danced the moonwalk and sang to the best of MJ's songs...Somehow,in this time of recession and hard times, Michael has brought back peace and love into the lives of so many people reminding all of us that family, friends children and health are the most important things in life...We also saw Al Chapman who was supportive and came to the Apollo to show respect and support Michael's family...The world is mourning the loss of a superstar and an amazing icon, but truly, the ones that are crying the most and hurting the most are his family and children. My thoughts and prayers are with them...AMEN.

Brooklyn Fashion Weekend

En La Escena covered the Brooklyn Fashion Weekend where we met up with the fabulous designers of “SACHIKA” To-Tam & To-Nya . En La Escena had full backstage access before the show & front row seats to a pre-view of their Fall 2009 collection, that left the crowd in awe and craving their line by the end of the show.

The collection featured a beautiful array of dresses in different styles which included wrap dresses, shouldered tiered dresses and wide leg jump suit's with halter neck lines in an assortment of hues such as teals, creams, burgundy's, navy, and dark royal purples. The line had a very 20's inspired flapper look, with floating hemlines and artistic drapery.

It was unanimous they stole the show!! A line that empowers woman & makes them feel sexy, elegant, yet very comfortable.

I want to share with you My Day experience while covering the Fashion show of designer extraordinaire, Tracy Reese. I love her designs, her Fall Collection truly understands what a woman wants! Everything about the collection is fabulous, the fabrics, the cuts, the colors & details. Tracy Reese has definitely managed to pull together a very classic & trendy Collection, yet her simplicity is quite exquisite.

Of course The crème de la crème of the fashion world was present at Tracy Reese's show. Personalities such as Paris & Nicky Hilton, Kim Kardashian & Reggie Bush, to name a few. But I must say that I truly enjoyed having the opportunity to interview personalities such as Philip Bloch, Robert Verdi & Miss Jay from America's Next Top Model, even the personal Stylist of Oprah Winfrey!
